“Design in Our Lives Reaction”

Design is a central element in the economy. It influences our lives on a daily basis from the food we eat, clothes, and even our homes whether or not we consider it. “Talk to Me” is an exhibit at MoMA that shows how artists enhance different types of communication between people and things through both functional and non-functional designs. It shows how different communication designs are transforming the way we live. Through out the exhibit it showed both high and low function designs.

Two high function designs that stood out to me was the "MTA vending machine" that actually works, it's the standard machine that you see in every train station. it allows you to choose between 4 different languages and allows you to choose between a new metro card or refilling a metro card. This machines is a functional design because its fast and easy and save many New Yorker time especially during rush hour. Another high function design was "MY Block NYC" it is a touch screen GPS/map that allow people to look up their neighborhood, it can also help people find their way in a neighborhood that they might never been in before. I think this design is functional because it can help in traveling and it can let you know exactly where you are going.

There are some designs that are low functions like the "Menstruation Machine" it is supposed to be worn by a man to feel the pains of a women menstrual. This design is low function because it really can't work. Another low function design was the "Communication Prosthesis Portrait Series" it was design to give a voice to people with low self-esteem by allowing them to smile using a big red lip to expose their teeth to give them confidence this often happens with timid people, it replace aggressiveness

Design are very important in everyone life, we might not all pick the same design but it still affect our everyday life. "Talk to Me" showed the same idea in their many different design.

Sculpture Center Reaction

The Sculpture Center is a non profit art institution that is dedicated to innovated development in contemporary sculpture. When I first walked in "Joia D Orixa" by Sanford Bigger immediately caught my attention. It is an oversize red doll that was dressed in a red and white glitter stripped skirt. It was placed in a clear box that had the same stripes just like a regular size barbie. At this point I was wondering what was the purpose of this doll and what does it represents. As I walked to the lower level I heard a young lady voices talking about her tattoos and what they mean to her in a video called" Dame of the World". I found this to be interesting because this is something that many people do. The Sculpture Center space is an unfinished product that has people wondering why, I think each piece fit into the architecture/space of the center because it left me with a lot of question about the exhbit. I would definitely visit the center again.

Art and World Events Reactions

Tragedies are very hurtful. Its a time that society mourns for the events that had just taken people lives. On September 11, 2001 tragedy made history. I remember being in class when parents started to pick up their children but I was unsure why. About twenty minutes later it was announced that one of the twin towers was hit a fewer minutes later we found out that the second tower was hit. The first person that I thought of was my cousin Christopher who had worked there was on his way to work when he founded out what had happen.

"Untitled (Questions)" was one of the art works that stood out to me at the MoMA PS 1. This art work caught my attention by the colors. It has a bunch of questions that even 10 years later many people are still asking questions like why? What could we have done differently? How will we move on from this? A second art work that I felt a connection to was "Silent Callinal" by JM by looking at the black plastic bags to me it represents the amount of bodies that were never found. It also represents the emptiness that each of the victims family felt.

"The Forty Part Motet" by Janet Cardiff was a group of 40 different people. I thought it was amazing because with 40 different voices together they sound as one voice. To me it represented the unity of America on that day. Listening to each voice you hear their struggle of coming to terms with what happen.

September 11, 2001 is a day that America will never forget. The people that lost their lives on this day will never be forgotten. 10 years later we are still being affected by it i.e. financial crisis in 2008, the war in Iraq, Health Now for the helpers of Sept. 11 and even the way we travel.
